Should You Buy or Lease Your Next Car?

(Geoffrey Cann)- Increasing numbers of businesses and individuals are choosing to lease from a finance company rather than buy when they need to replace their car or buy another. But is this a wise choice? Here we look at the pros and cons of each course of action.

Advantages of leasing include:
¨       A specialist broker can advise you on the best value leasing deals around, and which cars are the most efficient and reliable. They can also sort you out with fleet management to look after multiple cars if you have a big business.

¨       Monthly payments on a lease are fixed, so you can budget with confidence, and do not need to worry about payments rising as could be the case with a car loan.

¨       Monthly lease payments could well be less than the equivalent monthly payments on a car loan, especially for shorter leases. Read more here…

New products encourage car leasing

(Car Dealer Magazine)- Commenting on quarter two’s motor finance figures, Paul Harrison, the FLA’s head of motor finance, said: ‘Almost three out of five motorists buying a new car use dealer finance. While personal contract purchase (PCP) and hire purchase deals remain popular, increasing numbers of people are turning to leasing as an affordable finance option.

‘Traditionally, leasing has been more popular with businesses, but many manufacturers and independent finance companies are offering new and improved leasing options to private customers.

‘If insurance and servicing are included, it can make financial sense to lease, particularly for motorists who like to change their car every few years.’ Read more here…

Small Cars, Big Profits: Setting the Trend for Leasing

(PR Newswire)- Historically, manufacturers have pushed larger, more profitable vehicles by subsidizing their leases while de-emphasizing the smaller, less expensive models. But as gas prices and ecological awareness continue to rise, so does the public's demand for smaller, more fuel-efficient, "greener" cars; that means small cars will increase in value and leasing terms will become more attractive.

"A renewed focus on small vehicles is great news for leasing customers," said Swapalease.com's EVP of Operations, Scot Hall. "High MPG vehicles coupled with low lease payments add up to significant consumer savings, and at the same time, those leases are a great way to lure new car shoppers back to the showroom more quickly than standard long-term financing."

www.swapalease.com is the first and only full-service online marketplace of in-process vehicle leases. With the goal of matching individuals who are currently leasing vehicles they wish to get out of, with individuals who are looking for short-term leases with attractive payments and no money down, it's the perfect way to find the perfect vehicle for you. Shocker: 45% Of Premium-Brand “Buyers” Actually Lease

(Edward Niedermeyer)- Industry-wide, leases comprise about a fifth of all new vehicle registrations, but within the luxury market, lease penetration is more than twice as high at 45%. Three premium makes: BMW, Infiniti and Mercedes-Benz, actually have national lease rates at or above 50%…

These extraordinarily high lease results lead to several conclusions. First, the price of the vehicle is not the be-all and end-all. Rather, the monthly lease payment is a crucial factor. The monthly payment is not completely linked to the price, as the OEM and dealer have several tools by which to manipulate the monthly payment; these include, among other things, artificially raising the forecasted residual amount and increasing/decreasing the up-front lease payment. Second, if your premium make is not in the leasing business, you need to get there right away. Lastly, your lease rates, residuals and drive-away costs need to be competitive. Read more here…

What Are The Various Types Of Vehicle Leases Available To Customers When Purchasing A Vehicle

(Article Directory)- Car leases come in several different forms. Often a profitable and popular method of vehicle leasing available to businesses and individuals is contract hire. There is a regular monthly payment for the duration of the lease which can include maintenance and breakdown cover. This fixed amount allows you to plan your budget easily. Once the contract expires, the vehicle is returned to the cars lease company. There is no option to purchase the vehicle, but there is also no financial risk from having to dispose of the vehicle. There is no large upfront payment (sometimes as much as a third of the value when buying a car) which means that business credit lines are freed up. A good way to pay for the car leasing is to offset the rentals against business profits. Read more here…

Double taxation for those who lease cars

(Frederick W. Hartnett)- Randal Edgar's July 17 article ("Driven to tax") concisely and excellently presented the dilemma of the Rhode Island taxpayer regarding excise taxes and the continuing shifting of fiduciary responsibility from the state to the local level.

An additional burden is added to those who lease cars. Their excise tax is the same as those who buy cars. Yet the state also assesses a 7 percent sales tax annually on top of the excise tax charged by cities and towns. Read more here…

Mercedes prepares to enter leasing market by year-end

(Business Standard)- German luxury car maker Mercedes-Benz is preparing to commence leasing vehicles to consumers in the Indian market by the end of this year. No other luxury car maker in the country currently offers vehicles on lease directly to customers.

It would first lease Mercedes cars to companies. Eventually, when the venture reaches a certain size, Mercedes-Benz India (MBI) would look at offering vehicles on lease to individuals as well.

Dealers would purchase cars from the company and then lease the vehicles to corporate houses for a particular period. At the end of the lease period when the vehicles are returned to the dealers’ car pool, they would be sold in the pre-owned car market through the company’s ‘Proven Exclusivity’ program. The details of the business model for the new venture are being prepared. Read more here…

After One Year, Zipcar Drives Transportation Change in Baltimore

(PR Newswire)- Zipcar's expansion to Baltimore was made possible by an innovative partnership with the City and the Parking Authority of Baltimore City as part of a plan to reduce parking demand, congestion, and emissions, while offering citizens affordable personal transportation.  The survey data indicate that the service is making progress toward all those goals. The findings indicate three strong trends: Baltimore area Zipsters are driving less, reducing vehicle ownership and increasing uses of other modes, leading City of Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake to believe that the expansion of Zipcar in Baltimore has resulted in fewer car owners overall and sees the partnership as a successful tool for managing parking demand. Gaps in car insurance policies can leave drivers exposed

(Tulsa World)- When leasing or carrying an auto loan and the wrecked vehicle is deemed unsalvageable, it is "totaled" by the insurer - it will cost more to repair than it will be worth once repaired. When a total loss is claimed, the insurer calculates your payout based on the market value of the vehicle at the time of the crash. As many lease holders and borrowers are "upside-down" in their vehicles for much of their leases or loans, owing more than their vehicles are worth, they are on the hook for the gap. Read more here…

Vehicle leasing revs up as firms aim to cut costs

(Yorkshire Post)- A YORKSHIRE vehicle leasing company is growing as it capitalises on the credit drought and the slump in consumer spending.

Kudos Vehicle Management, a contract hire and leasing firm based in Halifax, has seen a spike in demand as the poor state of the economy means small business customers shun big ticket motor purchases.

The family-run firm, set up by former semi-professional squash coach Russell Bowker more than 25 years ago, turned over £8.25m last year, up nearly 15 per cent, despite the Japanese tsunami hitting order times. Now it expects to grow by between 50 and 60 per cent over the next five years. Read more here…
